No assigned problem the week of Exam II!

Problem #7: In Critical Thinking Problems, #1 on page 148 (Hints: the problem gives you a relation between ocean depth as a function of time for the situation where the plate is forming at a mid-ocean ridge and moving away from the ridge as time passes. Remember that your job is to make a cross-section of the ocean floor - with a horizontal DISTANCE axis, not a time axis. You have to convert time to distance using the speed relationship given in the problem (1 cm/yr, which comes out to 10 km per million years). ALSO REMEMBER that the equation given, Depth (in meters) = 2500 + 350*SQRT(t), the time t is in millions of years. That is, 1 million years = 1. Do not put 1,000,000 into the equation instead of "1". The Earth is only 12,700 km in diameter, so if you get ocean depths that are in hundreds of millions of meters, something is definitely wrong. The answers have to be "2500 meters plus a bit, maybe even plus another 2500 meters, but not millions of meters". KEY: make a plot of depth vs. distance with sea level equal to a horizontal line!!!!
