I arrived in Kyoto the night before the Gion Matsuri parade.
The floats were on display that evening.
The next day the floats were pulled through the streets of Kyoto.
The floats are hard to turn at the intersections.
The pry bars are used to help start them rolling.
I also visted Nanzen-ji, a Zen temple since 1291.
Most of the current buildings date from the 17th century.
One enters through the massive two story San-mon gate.
On my final day I visited Arashiyama, its famous bamboo grove, and Tenryuji.
The next day I took the Shinkansen to Kagoshima, where the volcanology conference was being held.
