Electronics and other fun stuff
Considerable work has been undertaken at the
Cold Region Analysis Group Laboratories at the University of Wyoming
to develop intelligent, micro-power recording sensors and loggers for various
cold regions applications. Past projects
have involved in-situ ice stress sensors, data loggers, basal ice data pods,
remote inclinometers and time lapse cameras.
Much of the older design work used Parallax Basic Stamp units as the
basis for dataloggers etc., after a modification was
made to reduce their power consumption from ~150microamp to 17microamp, which
allowed their use in remote instruments that need to run for several years
unattended. Newer designs are based on
the MSP430 series from TI, and on the PIC18F series from Microchip. Some of the older loggers have been running
continuously in the field, and recording data under severe conditions, for over
5 years.
