The aim of this course is to equip students with both
the technical and philosophical basis to judge the plethora of models in our
discipline. It is also an introduction
to some of the standard modeling techniques.
This is a lecture and workshop course in numerical methods applied to
several typical geo-science problems. We
will start by modeling heat flow in the near earth surface, introducing MATLAB
and Finite Difference methods, and moving into questions of non-linearity,
multiple dimensions etc. The rest of the
course will be on topics of interest to the students. In the past we have covered: cellular
automaton models of fluid flow, slider block models of earthquakes, chaos and
self organized criticality, mass conserving kinematic sedimentation models, and
simple wave propagation. The last part
of the course will construct and investigate a Finite Element model. We will only have time for about 3
topics. We will be using Matlab and some
Matlab experience will be useful.
