The orange book by Middleton and Wilcox on reserve for this course in the library has a chapter on stress (chapter 4) and a chapter on strain (chapter 7). The level of coverage is above what is needed for our course. However, there is a lot of relevant material in these chapters. I recommend you scan the chapters and read the parts that don't directly deal with tensor manipulations. You should read carefully the sections on how stress and strain are defined, and on the notation.
