Homework #9 Humphrey Geology 4888/5888 Fall 2009      GLACIOLOGY

These are due next Tuesday (Oct 13).  .

 Notes:

Your work must be neat, legible, and organized.

Readings:  Chapter 7 in Paterson

1 If 1 cubic meter of water per minute is falling down a Moulin in a glacier that is 200m thick, calculate the amount of ice melted by this water?  Assume the water temperature is zero at the surface, and assume the basal water pressure is approximately zero.  Express the result in cubic meters per sec.

2 Consider the long valley glacier from the previous homework.  The central region is wide and straight.  The slope is 3 degrees, the depth is 200m, and it is temperate.  You may assume this is approximately a uniform slab type glacier (see Patterson chapter

a) Plot the velocity profile on graph paper or use a computer.  You must include labels on the axes, and a numerical scale.

b) If the ice flowed around a bend, so that there where other stresses in the above problem, would the ice flow tend to be faster or slower?  Sketch by hand on your plot from (a) the probable change in the velocity profile, resulting from a small additional stress in some orthogonal (perpendicular) direction.
